Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at work in the Authorised Treatment Facility.

The level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at work is a new nationally-recognised qualification which provides employees with a basic knowledge of health and safety in the Authorised Treatment Facility.

The Level 1 Certificate has been developed in consultation with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO), the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and employers.

The Certificate is based on the national occupational standards for Health and Safety for People at Work and has been accredited by QCA at Level 1 in the National Qualifications Framework.

The Certificate in Health and Safety at Work provides employees with an excellent introduction to health and
safety in the ATF and recognises their learning in the form of a nationally-recognised qualification.

What does the Level 1 Certificate involve?
Candidates attend for one day training to prepare for the examination.
40-question multiple-choice examination.
Examinations are offered in-company and on-demand (examination fee of £12 per candidate).
Results and certificates are issued within five working days.
The examination should be separate from any training, thus allowing candidates adequate time to assimilate the learning material and prepare properly for the assessment.

What are the Entry Requirements?
The qualification pre-supposes no previous health and safety knowledge on the part of candidates. Candidates will come from diverse educational and work experience backgrounds and could work for employers ranging from large national companies to small businesses.

Know the implications of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 for people at all levels in the workplace.

know the responsibilities of the employer regarding the provision and maintenance of a safe working environment;
know the main methods of preventing materials or persons falling;
know the main methods of preventing slips, trips and falls;
know the main methods of preventing workplace transport accidents.

Workplace Accidents
know what is meant by an accident and a near miss;
know why accidents occur;
understand the impact of accidents on individuals and organisations;
understand the need to report accidents and near misses;
know the procedure for reporting accidents and near misses.

Reducing Workplace Injuries
know the main causes of workplace injury;
know how to reduce the risk of workplace injury.

Risk Management
know the principles of risk management;
know what is meant by a hazard and a risk;
be able to identify basic hazards in the authorised treatment facility;
know the Health and Safety Executive's five steps to risk assessment;
know the hierarchy of risk control measures.

Personal Protective Equipment
know the main types of personal protective equipment and the main hazards they offer protection against;
know the principles of provision, maintenance, storage and replacement of personal protective equipment.

Fire Safety
know the most common causes of fire;
know what can be done to reduce the risk of fire;
know the actions to take on discovering a fire;
know the main types of fire extinguisher and what fires they can be used on.

Electrical Safety
know the main hazards associated with electricity;
know how to reduce the risks associated with electricity;
know how to use portable electrical appliances safely;
know how to recognise defective electrical equipment.

Hazardous Substances
know the main types of hazardous substances;
know how to reduce the risks associated with electricity;
know how to use portable electrical appliances safely;
know how to recognise defective electrical equipment.

Safety Signs and Signals
know the main safety signs and signals.

Manual Handling
know the most common injuries associated with manual handling activities;
know the main duties of employers and employees regarding manual handling;
know the main hazards and risks associated with manual handling;
know the main methods of reducing the risks associated with manual handling.

Workstations and Display Screen Equipment
know the main health risks associated with workstations and display screen equipment;
know the main duties of employers regarding workstations and display screen equipment;
know how to reduce the risks associated with workstations and display screen equipment.

Work-Related Ill-Health
know the main work-related ill-health effects;
know the causes and effects of work-related stress;
